AVAILABLE WEEK OF MAY 26, 2009:
NEW IN TOWN
COMEDY - Lucy Hill (Renée Zellweger) is an ambitious up-and-coming executive living in Miami. She loves her shoes, she loves her cars and she loves climbing the corporate ladder. When she is offered a temporary assignment in Minnesota (with its Canada-like sub-zero temperaturesre) to restructure a manufacturing plant, she takes the opportunity, knowing that a big promotion is close at hand.
What begins as a straight-forward assignment becomes a life-changing experience as Lucy discovers cold weather and a warm community, leading her to slowly submit to greater meaning in her life - and most unexpectedly, to her arch nemesis who may be the man of her dreams (seems obvious as that person happens to be Harry Connick, Jr.). Great cast of supportive, down to earth Minnesotans includes Siobhan Fallon Hogan (remember the Birthing Teacher in Baby Mama?), Frances Conroy (mother "Ruth Fisher" form Six Feet Under) and J.K. Simmons (the dad in Juno). A fun, light-hearted flick and Zellwegger's penchant for occaisional well timed slapstic is nothing less than charming.
Thriller - "Yesterday she was a witness. Today she's a target."
Beautiful Carmen Colson (Diane Lane) and her ironworker husband Wayne (Thomas Jane) are placed in the Federal Witness Protection program after witnessing an "incident". Thinking they are at last safe, they are targeted by ultra-cool professional hit man "Blackbird" (Mickey Rourke) and his bumbling partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a psychopathic young upstart killer. The ensuing struggle will test Carmen and Wayne's already fragile relationship to the limit. Ultimately, it all comes down to one wife, one husband, two killers...
and one lethal killshot.
Directed by John Madden who cut his teeth in the 1990's directing BBC thrillers such as "Inspector Morse", "Prime Suspect" before moving on to making the more acclaimed period piece box office successes "Shakespeare in Love" and "Mrs Brown".
Action-Drama - Brian (Mark Ruffalo) and Paulie (Ethan Hawke) are friends who grew up like brothers on the gritty streets of south Boston. They do whatever it takes to survive, living by the code of their dog-eat-dog neighbourhood. Petty crimes and misdemeanours grow into more serious offences and eventually, they fall under sway to organized crime boss Pat Kelly (Brian Goodman).
As Brian becomes increasingly lost in a haze of drugs and 'jobs', even the love he has for his wife (Amanda Peet) and his children does not seem like it will be enough to redeem him. Meanwhile, Paulie plans "one last heist" but knows it will take both of them to pull it off. How can they escape the only life they know?
This is the true-life story of the film's writer/director Brian Goodman and screenplay credits include cast member Donnie Wahlberg (Mark Wahlberg's older "Johnny-Drama-like" brother) - whose "in and out of trouble" upbringing in a poor working class district of Boston also lends integrity of the script.
